To BEE or not to BEE? ... That has been the question.
The Chef's Garden has an answer.
Einstein once said that when the bee population is wiped out, the human race will be gone within four years of that event. What a scary scenario!!
There is indisputable evidence to be concerned about the honeybee situation. Some researchers believe that years of using chemicals and pesticides have reduced the nutritional value of the ground... the poor condition of the soil means that the full nutrient base needed by bees is absent, so they are dying off.
There are other reasons as well - global warming that invites an increase in mites and viruses, and increasing cell phone usage, that interrupts a bee's navigation through the air. Bees are essential to pollinating fruits, vegetables and flowers.
For all these reasons, and knowing that bees are essential to pollinating fruits, vegetables and flowers - we are taking action.
We are committing an entire farm to help revitalize the bee population. This acreage will be devoted exclusively to populating safe, healthy bees. We will allow portions of the farm to set fallow, but will also plant vegetable and flower material that will attract bees. The plant material will absorb carbon dioxide, allowing for healthier bees.
